Two devastating earthquakes hit southern Turkey near the border with Syria on February 6th, killing and injuring thousands of people in both countries

The death toll for Turkey- Syria earthquake surpases 40,000

The Earthquakes

These mighty earthquakes hit southern turkey near the border of Syria. The first 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck early on Monday, February 6, followed by a more minor 7.5 magnitude earthquake just hours later.

Turkey lies at the center of 3 tectonic plates, the Anatolian, Arabian, and African; the movement of these tectonic plates built up pressure at the fault zones of the boundaries, resulting in the earthquake.

Still ongoing...

There have been more than 100 aftershocks causing buildings to collapse in the affected regions.

Search and recuse operations are underway as there are thought to be many people trapped in the rubble

Recently a  third 6.4 magnitude earthquake has hit southern Turkey this time of magnitude 6.4.

Syria

The situation in Syria is particularly bad...

North-west Syria has been some of the worst affected areas.

Before the earthquakes, Syria endured a decade-long civil war, leaving vital services at their breaking point.

  • Millions of people have been relying on aid to survive even before the earthquake.

Due to a complicated political situation, much of the international aid has gone to Turkey over Syria.

  •  The Syrian government has denied much access to aid, forcing help to enter the region through on land route.
  • Recently, some restrictions have been laid off, allowing aid routes to expand.
  • Ten International Organization for Migration trucks carrying humanitarian assistance has passed through the Bab al-Salam crossing into northwestern Syria from Turkey

Still...

Aid has been slow to reach Syria  due to a complex political situation

  • The UN estimates up to 5-3 million people  in Syria may be homeless after the earthquakes
